Cephrael's Hand - Melissa McPhail
I've been a fan of fantasy for years and voraciously consume series after series. THIS one is amazing! I found the language to be intelligent, witty and complex. The characters were multidimensional as well. The storyline jumps right into the action so it's kinda confusing without knowing the characters, and their backstories, but keep with it, Melissa McPhail knows how to weave a complex story and feeds the answers to your questions slowly but surely. The world building is absolutely magnificent. Keep them coming, Ms. McPhail!

In the first story, we are introduced to Prince Ean of Dannym as he is tragically attacked by dark creatures, losing his beloved blood brother at the hands of a shade, then later rescued by a zanthyr. The creatures and the magic McPhail had built are fascinating and awesome. Though you spend most of your time grappling with all the mysteries, McPhail keeps the action moving so well that you find yourself eagerly flying through the pages to put the story together in your mind. This author is masterful at feeding you dribbles at a time and by the end you are not sure who is good and who is evil. Who is in love with whom and who is destined to be together??

Trell of the Tides was in an accident five years ago and lost his memory. He was taken in by the Emir and raised as a son, becoming one of the Emir's trusted soldiers, leading the war effort against the west. But Trell is of western birth, though he doesn't know anything about his birth, the Amir has encouraged him to go on a journey to seek his life's mysteries. Trell's life is saved by the Sundragons who are sworn friends of the Amir's Mage, and Trell's adventure of self discovery brings him to the Nadori desert, where he begins to understand that he is part of a destiny being closely watched over by someone called the First Lord. And the stories within stories go on and on.

I will say there are A LOT of characters and storylines to keep up with, but I feel a personal relationship with all of them. The characters are very emotional and, as an empathetic reader, I find myself on the emotional roller coaster with them.

I highly, highly recommend this series!
