Review

I'm not sure why I took so long to pick up this exceptional dystopian novel! So, imagine everyone having to get sorted by the sorting hat at Hogwarts, but into 5 houses, each representing a virtue...Candor (honesty), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (kindness), and Erudite (intelligence). At 16, individuals are tested and placed in the house that best represents that person's values. And, generally that sorting is very easy...people fall clearly into one house. Beatrice is raised in Abnegation and when she is tested, her virtue is not clear...she could fit into one of three of the houses. So, during her "sorting" ceremony, she has to choose.
The story, from this point is a steady exploration of how Beatrice (Tris) finds courage within herself, always knowing that she was divergent, an aberration who had no one clear direction. And being a divergent is not something she can share, or she will be killed.
Well written and executed, this is a story that will stick with you for some time. There is room for a sequel or two, but it's an excellent stand-alone story.
